Hubpages and Affiliate Earnings

In my last post, I mentioned that Hubpages had teamed up with Kontera ads to help make writing a Hubpage even more profitable to us the Hubpages Authors.

I have been running the Kontera ads on my hubs for a few days now and I am surprised at the outcome.

The first three days saw a decrease in my earnings from Google adsense, and the Kontera ads were making a few cents, not enough to cover what I was losing with Google, but on the fourth day my Adsense earnings went back to the same levels as I was making before the Kontera ads were introduced to my pages. The Google ads have been at their normal level since the fourth day.

Kontera ads are now my second best source of income from my hubs, I am making around the same every day just around the $1.00 mark, I am sure that this will continue over time and may even increase as I continue to write more hubs.

Advertising with ebay and amazon is still a bit of an unknown for me although I do make money now and again from them I just can’t seem to get people to buy something from those sources on a regular basis.

Kontera seems to be working for me, I wonder if it is working for you too.

Hubpages and Kontera

An announcement this week in the Hubpages forums, caused a bit of a stir, as you are aware you can earn from hubpages through 4 different sources, Google Adsense, Ebay, Amazon and through url trackers.

Now their are 5 ways to earn, Hubpages have teamed up with Kontera a pay per click advertising programme to offer us another potential earning opportunity.

PAUL DEEDS (HUBPAGES) SAID”You can enable or disable it for individual hubs by editing them, and changing the Kontera setting next to Ad Level.  You can also turn it on or off for all of your hubs at once on the affiliate settings page.  The text link ads will only appear to readers that are not signed in to HubPages.  In our tests we saw a 15-20% boost in total income per hub, but your results may vary.”

I have signed up for Kontera but I am still awaiting confirmation, I am sure though that it will provide a boost to the earnings that I make from the site, keep an eye out here for weekly update on how Kontera affects my earnings in the first few months.

I am sure it will be an interesting time for all of the Hubpages authors and staff.

Hubpages and Me

Jimmythejock is the name and hubpages is my game

I first joined hubpages around 2 years ago and I wrote my first article on the same day that I signed up to the site, to my surprise I recieved my first comment around 2 minutes after clicking on the publish button, and before I knew it I had over 100 hits on my page within 24 hours, from that moment on I was addicted, people were actualy reading things that I had written and they were even adding their own 2 cents to my articles.

In my previous attempts at writing on the internet I was lucky to get 10 readers a week and the only comments I ever recieved were spammy links to get rich quick sites.

I began writing on hubpages every day sometimes 3 or 4 hubs in a single day, my record is 17 in 1 day but I will not try to beat that one again.

The more readers and comments that I recieved the more hubs I wanted to produce, it wasn’t long before I had reached my first milestone 100 hubs only one other author Drax had reached that milestone.

The hubpages community were an inspiration, they encouraged each other, and were always available to offer helpful advice and tips, and the whole community rallied together to help anyone who was down, I took ill and the support I recieved from everyone throughout that difficult time was unbelievable. The hubpages community became like a second family to me.

I kept on writing Hubs every day reaching new milestones 200 hubs 300 Hubs and in February 2007 I reached the milestone that I had been aiming for and with my 400th hubpage I was proud to be the first Hubpages Author to be entered into the Hubpages hall of fame.

After I published Hub 400, I realised that the quality of my Hubs were not as good as they could be if I took more time to research the topics I was writing about and I started to take a little more time and care when writing, I stopped producing daily pages and I now try to produce more high quality information in my writing.

I have written 610 hubs now and I will keep writing on hubpages for as long as I can.

My Earnings from Hubpages

I am a hobby writer and when I joined hubpages I had no interest in earning any money from the ads on my pages, I still really don’t care if people click on the ads when they read my Hubs, I am happy in the knowledge that people are reading what I write.

It was 3 months before I recieved my first click on a google ad on a hub and from that click I made 11cents, soon after though I started getting regular clicks and it took me another 3 months before I was qualified for my first adsense check.

The money That I make on Hubpages is a bonus, and I put my earnings on adsense on hold for a while promising that I would treat the children with it when I decided to cash in, 3 months ago I took my adsense hold off and my earnings from hubpages were enough to pay for this years family vacation to Bulgaria and I still have a couple of hundred left over to give the kids as spending money when we get there.

Not too bad for a hobby.

Hubpages to Earn or not to Earn

Some Hubpages rake in 100s of dollars every month  whilst others are lucky to make a single cent.

Some Hubpages Authors join the site for the sole purpose of making money whilst others join for the joy of having their work read by other people.

Then there are authors like myself who write as a hobby and make a few bucks into the bargain.

For me I started writing on hubpages as a hobby and I have been writing on the site now for 2 years and writing there remains my hobby and money I earn from the affiliate links on my hubpages is a bonus.

Some of my fellow hubbers are earning $1500.00 - $2000.00 every month and they deserve every penny that they earn, because they work hard and put in hours of their time promoting their pages.

Making money on hubpages depends on many factors including hard work and perseverance, niche topics, marketing, and most of all publising original and high quality material.

As I work in a full time job outside of my hubpages hobby, I find that my time is very limited and I have to make a choice between writing a new hub or marketing some of my older ones.

My hobby is writing therefore through choice, I write new hubpages rather than market my existing ones, If I had more time I would do both and I would probably be one of the higher earning authors on hubpages.

I still consider myself to be very lucky though because I recieve a check every month from Google for approx $200.00, I earn approx $10 a month from ebay and around $5.00 from Amazon.

Not bad for a hobby.

Hubpages Quality versus Quantity

I could write 20 hubpages today on topics off the top of my head and although I would get a few visits from people to them for the first couple of days the traffic  would soon dwindle until eventually they would only get one or 2 visitors a month.

I could do some research and produce 1high quality hub today and I would get a few visitors in the first few days from fellow hubbers and then when the search engines have found my hub the traffic would keep coming.

Having published over 600 hubs on Hubpages, I have been guilty of throwing together 10 hubs in a single day I think my record for a single day is 17, around half of all of my hubs were just thrown together written quickly without any research what-so-ever, In the early days of the hubpages site I got hooked and like a kid with a new toy I went crazy every waking moment as the hubstaff will verify I was never away from the site and i wasn’t happy unless I was writing a hub or commenting on another hubbers work.

Those early hubs have ran their course and recieve about 1 visitor every 3 months, they were never money makers and between the first 300 of my hubs I think I earned around $50 all time.

These days I don’t write as often I publish 1 or 2 hubs in a week, I take more time to do some research on and offline on the subject I have chosen, and I consider my hubs of a higher quality with more information and a more professional look to them. I try to write on Evergreen content (content that is not restricted to time of year) and content that I would find useful if I was searching for information on that particular subject.

I get a lot more visitors to my hubs since I changed the way I write and I earn alot more money from my pages.

Quantity is sufficient if you want to make a quick cent, But Quality is king if you want to put some real money in your bank account and keep the money coming in on a long term basis.
